Backflow Testing in Lake Macquarie

Donza Plumbing tests, certifies, installs and repairs backflow prevention devices across 82 Lake Macquarie suburbs, from a base in Mannering Park on the southern shore of the lake. Hunter Water supplies the water here, so that is where the annual test report is lodged. We lodge it after the test.

Why every year

Hunter Water notes that a testable device has internal seals, springs and moving parts that wear or fail, so it is tested after installation and every year after by an accredited tester, and registered with Hunter Water.

Licence & cover

NSW Fair Trading contractor licence 498220C covers plumbing, drainage and gas fitting, with backflow prevention accreditation. The business carries $20 million public liability cover (ABN 51 697 209 153).

Hunter Water rules

Which Lake Macquarie properties need a device?

It comes down to the hazard rating, assessed on site against the three ratings in AS/NZS 3500. Hunter Water sets the device for each one. Where a site runs several processes with different ratings, the highest rating applies.

Low hazard
A nuisance, but no danger to health. Hunter Water’s standard 20 mm and 25 mm meters already have a low-hazard device built in. A meter larger than 25 mm needs a testable device after it.
Medium hazard
Could endanger health. Hunter Water requires a testable double check valve, fitted straight after the meter.
High hazard
Could cause death. Hunter Water requires a testable reduced pressure zone device, fitted straight after the meter.

The rating is reassessed when what happens on the site changes. Backflow testing explained covers who needs a device and what the test involves, and commercial plumbing covers strata and commercial sites.

How it runs

How a backflow test runs

  1. Step 1

    Find the device

What is installed, where it sits and what Hunter Water expects of it.

  2. Step 2

    Test with gauges

The device is isolated, the test kit goes on and the readings are recorded.

  3. Step 3

    Fix what fails

A failed device usually needs a service or a part. That is quoted first, then the device is retested.

  4. Step 4

    Lodge the report

The result goes to Hunter Water and your copy stays with you.

Good to know

Backflow testing in Lake Macquarie: common questions

Who do backflow test reports go to in Lake Macquarie?

Hunter Water. It supplies water and sewer across Lake Macquarie and keeps the register of testable devices, so the report for a Lake Macquarie property is lodged with Hunter Water, not with a council. We lodge it after the test.

Which device does Hunter Water keep on its register?

The site containment device, the one straight after the water meter. Zone and individual devices further inside a development are the property owner’s responsibility, and we can test those on the same visit.

Does a house in Lake Macquarie need a backflow test?

Usually not. A single low-hazard house on a standard 20 mm or 25 mm service does not need a separate device, because Hunter Water’s standard meters have a low-hazard device built in. Tell us about a rainwater tank or bore connected to the drinking water pipework, or a pool with a mains top-up, so the hazard rating is assessed properly.

What happens if the device fails the test?

A failed device usually needs a service or a part. We quote the repair or the replacement before doing it, then retest and lodge the passing result with Hunter Water.

Do you install backflow devices in Lake Macquarie, or only test them?

Both. We installed a testable device on the water service at a property boundary in Belmont North, with isolation valves and a strainer either side. New installs are tested after installation and every year after.
