Local context

Rathmines: what to know before a plumbing job

Rathmines was the largest wartime flying boat base in Australia. The RAAF station formed on 14 August 1939, council’s history gives 1940 for the base’s water supply, and the unit ceased on 30 November 1952. In 1963, council says, Lake Macquarie Shire Council bought the base from the Commonwealth and subdivided 150 acres into home sites, keeping the rest for recreation. Rathmines Park (former RAAF Seaplane Base) is on the State Heritage Register, and its listed curtilage includes land 100 metres back from the high water mark. Before any digging near the foreshore, check the lot against the Heritage Council’s curtilage plan.
