Local context

Plumbing in Highfields: the local picture

Council’s history says Highfields was most probably named for its elevated position and the grass-covered hills the suburb was built on. The first subdivision, Cotterill’s Estate, went on sale on 6 March 1920; the land was sold again by auction in April 1938, in the advertisement where the name Highfields first appears. By 1950 a newspaper called it a rapidly growing suburb partway up the Pacific Highway’s climb to Charlestown, and Adamstown Heights Infants School ran at 20a Hillcrest Parade from 1950 to 1990. On a block that falls away from the street, the fall of the drains is the first thing to settle before a bathroom is moved or added.
