Local context

Dudley at a glance, for plumbing work

Dudley’s first subdivision was declared in January 1889, the year after South Burwood Colliery opened at Dudley; the mine took the Dudley name in 1891 and was closed and demolished in 1940. Council’s Dudley Heritage Precinct plan describes the earlier dwellings as working-class cottages from the late nineteenth century coalfields and lists the most significant original miners’ cottages as heritage items. Its site coverage limit is 45%, including ancillary development, and one aim is on-site stormwater infiltration. Council’s history gives 1928 for the water supply and 1964 for sewerage. An extension inside the precinct is measured against that limit, so drainage and stormwater are planned with the site plan.
