Local context

Swansea Heads at a glance, for plumbing work

Swansea Heads is where Lake Macquarie opens to the sea. Reids Mistake, the southern headland of the entrance, is named after Captain William Reid, who loaded coal there in 1800 believing he was at the Hunter River, and Lancelot Threlkeld set up a coal loading depot at the heads in 1842. Swansea Heads is also one of five suburbs in the council’s Local Adaptation Plan for future flooding and coastal risks. A small part of it forms the Swansea Heads Mine Subsidence District, where Subsidence Advisory NSW approval is needed before starting work on a property. An extension in that area is worth planning with the approval in mind.
