Awaba began as a timber and railway settlement: a timber depot and a railway construction depot were set up in 1885, the first Crown subdivision plan was approved in 1891, and a public school opened that June. The Awaba State Coal Mine was established in 1948, and a branch line to Wangi Wangi Power Station opened in 1954 and is now disused. At the 2021 Census 97.9% of occupied dwellings were separate houses. Council gives 1948 for the water supply, 57 years after the first subdivision plan, so older Awaba houses are worth tracing back to how they were first supplied.
