Local context

Pelican: what to know before a plumbing job

Pelican is named for the pelicans that once flocked on the lake, and the council’s history says the name first applied to Swansea as well. Its post office opened in 1927 and the Carnley Estate was subdivided in 1937. Pelican Foreshore Park looks onto the Swansea Channel, where the NSW Government warns currents can run strong. Pelican is also one of five suburbs in the council’s Local Adaptation Plan, which names inundation, flooding, drainage and sewerage among its hazards. A drainage or sewer change here is worth checking against that plan first.
