Teralba is one of the earliest railway and mining settlements in Lake Macquarie: the station opened on 15 August 1887, and the Great Northern Coal Co began mining the year before. Town water reached Teralba in 1916, council says, and sewerage followed in 1963. Part of the village is a heritage conservation area, with listed items including the Great Northern Hotel and "House A.S.", built for Andrew Sneddon, founder of Gartlee Mine. For heritage items, council’s controls say the original room configuration should be kept in the first instance, which shapes how far a bathroom or kitchen can move.
