Local context

Arcadia Vale: what to know before a plumbing job

Arcadia Vale was first called Kirkdale, after the early settler Joseph Kirk. Henry Halloran’s 1922 subdivision, influenced by the English Garden City movement, set out curving streets and many small parks. The waterfront was sold first, as boatshed sites, and in the Depression many families, especially out-of-work miners, moved into the boatsheds and dug wells for fresh water. The public school opened in 1958 and the baths in 1959. A lot that began as a boatshed site and later gained a house can have its supply and drain runs laid at different times, so tracing both comes first in a renovation.
