A subdivision at Ryhope was planned in 1881, and Samuel Brown bought much of it and became known as the "Squire of Ryhope". Two small coalmines, Blowfly Pit and March Fly Pit, worked the mountain opposite his holding. In the 1970s the council moved to buy land in the old subdivision to control future development. Ryhope is home to the Lake Macquarie Memorial Park, Cemetery and Crematorium on Cessnock Road, which a council planning proposal describes as served by Hunter Water’s reticulated water and as having an on-site sewage management system. The 2021 Census counted 35 residents. That one property shows mains water and on-site sewage can sit together, so each is checked separately.
