Local context

Gateshead: what to know before a plumbing job

By 1929 Gateshead had seven houses, and council’s history says water in the 1930s came from tanks or from springs that are now part of a creek. Seventy more houses were completed and occupied between 1948 and 1950, and sewerage followed in 1961. The Metro Estate went onto the former Metro Drive-In site in 1993. In the 2021 Census, 43.9% of Gateshead’s occupied homes were rented. A house from the 1948 to 1950 building run predates that sewer, so its drains are worth tracing before a renovation.
