Local context

Plumbing in Toronto: the local picture

The Toronto Hotel opened in December 1887, built from locally made bricks, and council’s history notes that a plumber and a bricklayer came from Sydney to work on it and other buildings. The first reticulated water arrived in 1919 and sewerage in 1945. Council’s heritage plan covers the foreshore and the northern residential peninsula, where it records houses from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century. Before altering a house, check whether it sits inside the Toronto Heritage Precinct.
