Local context
Jewells takes its name from John Jewell, who owned a tanning and leather factory in Newcastle and led hunting parties into Jewells Swamp between 1870 and 1890. The swamp and Jewells Beach later hosted a commando training course in the Second World War, and a concrete box gutter replaced the causeway over the swamp in 1959. Jewells Public School opened in January 1977 and Jewellstown Shopping Plaza was completed in 1982. The Belmont Wetlands State Park plan calls the swamp wetlands and a large dune beside them a community landmark and puts Third Creek in the swamp’s catchment. A block that backs onto the swamp or its creeks should have its stormwater path confirmed before drainage work.
