Local context

Plumbing in Hillsborough: the local picture

Hillsborough’s first land sale was in February 1876, and by 1877 council’s history counts eight houses and a hotel while the Australasian Coal Company prepared a large mine. The company spent 68,000 pounds, could not sell its coal and was liquidated, abandoning Hillsborough in 1879. Council says the town was virtually wiped out and not re-settled until after the Second World War. Sewerage came in 1960 and the public school opened in 1963. Subsidence Advisory NSW’s district map labels Hillsborough inside the Lake Macquarie Mine Subsidence District. Building work there needs approval before it starts, so a renovation’s plumbing is scoped after it.
