Local context

Killingworth at a glance, for plumbing work

Killingworth Colliery, also known as West Wallsend Extended, opened in 1892, and a private railway carried its coal to the main northern line at Cockle Creek. An explosion in December 1910 wrecked the mine, though no lives were lost. The township’s first subdivision, in 1901, was formed by Wallace and Westcroft Streets, The Trongate and Killingworth Road. The suburb lies inside Subsidence Advisory NSW’s Killingworth-Wallsend mine subsidence district, where most building and subdividing needs its approval, so an extension that adds a bathroom or laundry should start with that check.
