Argenton takes its name from the Sulphide Corporation, which treated metals including gold and silver-lead: "argent" is French for silver, and Silverton near Broken Hill was already taken. The Mines Rescue Station began operating in October 1927, and the Waratah Golf Club, founded in 1901, has been on its present site since 1920. Council gives 1950 for sewerage. The Planning Portal’s Subsidence Advisory layer shows almost all of Argenton inside the Lake Macquarie Mine Subsidence District, where approval from Subsidence Advisory NSW is needed before building or extending a home.
The NSW EPA’s Lead Abatement Strategy Area covers land it considers potentially contaminated by lead from the former Pasminco smelter, and Argenton is one of the three suburbs the EPA names. Its map shows which properties are in the area and its guidance covers soil dug from them, so check both before a drain or water service is trenched: NSW EPA: lead soil disposal for Lake Macquarie residents.
