Local context

Plumbing in Macquarie Hills: the local picture

In 1889 the Newcastle Wallsend Coal Company began the Macquarie Subdivision, and part of the bush track called Government Road became Macquarie Road. Further stages in 1919 and 1922 took the road out to where Lawson Road and Blaxland Road were being built. Council’s history entry says Macquarie Hills would have taken its name from that subdivision and its nearness to Munibung Hill. It was part of Cardiff until its boundaries were defined in 1991 and it became a suburb on 10 August 2001. Work on a house along those older roads is best planned after a look at the existing supply and drains.
