Local context

Coal Point: the first lake mine, and when the mains arrived

Coal Point is named for the first coal mine on Lake Macquarie. The missionary Lancelot Threlkeld began mining the Ebenezer pit in 1841 on the south-western side of the point, at what is now Threlkeld Reserve, and it was still being worked as South Hetton Colliery in 1906. Subdivision of the point began in 1891. Lake Macquarie City Council’s local history entry gives 1928 for the water supply and 1959 for sewerage. A house built before those dates and not re-piped since is worth a closer look at its supply line and sewer connection.
