Local context

Plumbing in Barnsley: the local picture

Barnsley was called Teralba until April 1891, when the school took the name Barnsley, probably after the Yorkshire coalmining town that early settler David Johnson’s property was named for. About 1890 J.C. Bonarius tried to float a coal mining company called Central Wallsend and subdivided the adjoining land, which he named Barnsley. Orchards, dairy farms and vegetable farms were typical of the area, and Lake Macquarie City Council’s local history entry gives 1949 for the water supply. Where a house stood before 1949, any connection to council water came later, so ask when its supply pipe was last renewed.
