How a heat pump works (and why it is cheap to run)
A heat pump works like a fridge running in reverse. Instead of using a heating element to make heat, it uses a small compressor to pull warmth out of the surrounding air and pump it into the tank. Moving heat is far cheaper than making it, so a heat pump uses roughly a third of the electricity of a standard electric storage system to deliver the same hot water. That is where the saving comes from, every day, for the life of the unit.
The rebates, honestly
There are a few layers, and they do not all apply to everyone:
- Federal STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates). This is the big one and it applies nationwide. Eligible heat pump systems earn a number of certificates, and most installers apply their value as an up-front discount at the point of sale, so you do not lodge anything or wait for a refund. The number of certificates depends on the specific unit and your climate zone.
- State and energy-retailer offers. NSW runs its own Energy Savings Scheme, where accredited suppliers can discount an eligible heat-pump install, and retailer programs come and go on top of it. Each has its own eligibility rules, so the only reliable answer is to check what is running at the time you are buying.

Is it worth it for your home?
A heat pump suits most households, and it is an especially good move if you:
- run a medium-to-large household that uses a fair bit of hot water,
- have rooftop solar (set the heat pump to run during the day and you are heating water on near-free power),
- are replacing an old electric storage unit and want to cut the running cost.
